Black and White vs Colour – part 4

Well, it’s november and time for another Black and White vs Colour – part 4 this time. Some day I’ll put the votes together and see the result ;) This is from the weekend. Leaves are falling, snow melting, rain, snow, wind, gray … as I said, november.

My wife on colourfilm, scanned and converted to black and white. Daydreaming?

This is from the beginning of the millenia. I had very limited technical know-how about cameras and photography. I borrowed my mother in laws camera and lens (unknown SLR from the 70′s). Shot this on colourfilm. Some years later I scanned it. Now I have converted it to black and white in Photoshop.

I kind of like it. I think I did as good as I could with my training as a painter/artist, and if I was lucky I had used the camera right and it turned out good. Quite often though, it turned ut in many other ways ;)

Pidgins with Super-Takumar 135mm/3.5

In a trip to Granbergsdal with friends I made the images of pidgins with the Asahi Super-Takumar 135mm/3.5. The black and white was converted in Photoshop and the little grain came from a layer with scanned T-Max 400 imported in photoshop and put on this digital image.

In front of Auto-Takumar 85mm/1.8

Are you like me – rather the one behind the camera the in front of it? However, sooner or later you will need a picture of yourself, right? For your company, CV, website, book – whatever.

Well, I needed a couple of images for different occasions. So late tonight I took out the cameragear and gave it a try.

  • A chair
  • Two constructionlights (500W)
  • Tripod
  • Camera with m42-lens Asahi Auto-Takumar 85mm/1.8
  • A piece of string
  • Some Photoshopping

I tied the string to the tripod and stretched it to the chair. Sitting on the chair I focused on the tripod. Without touching the focus I put the camera back on the tripod. With the string I could tell where the focus in the image is.

I put selftimer on and ran back to the chair. Took the string to my eye (so it would be in focus). The lights were like I wanted them after several attempts. It’s a bit trial and error. I don’t have good flash or studiolights so I have to use whats available, but I think it turned out ok:

The other day I was out for a walk with my wife and duaghter. I had some good experiences with the Super-Takumar 135mm/3.5 making portraits and birdshots. Here are a couple of portraits converted to black and white in Photoshop (with Channel-mixer).
